Christina Andriole – Principal, Lumen Studio Inc

Lumen Studio provides architectural lighting design services for interior and exterior environments using day lighting, electric lighting, and controls integration. Founded in 2012, Lumen Studio believes that quality sustainable lighting solutions can be steeped in creativity. We bring over 20 years’ combined experience with backgrounds in architectural lighting, landscape architecture, theatrical lighting, and interior design. We are committed to excellence and enable our clients to realize their vision uniquely, while meeting their needs, scope, and budget. We work with architects, landscape architects, engineers, interior designers, developers, building owners, and private individuals. Our office is located in the greater Boston metro area.

What is your company philosophy?

LS: We like to design outside of our comfort zone. We believe that the most successful projects happen when we take risks that result in truly unique yet conscientious solutions for our clients. Our grounding in the technical aspects of the discipline enables us to take risks that are calculated, thus assuring our clients a successful outcome. Some people consider it “thinking outside the box,” we consider it our philosophy.

What was the most defining moment for your business?

CA: Because our business is new, its most defining moment was starting it. When the courage, passion, and drive come together to take something from imagined to real, it is thrilling.

Three projects you have completed that best represent your ideals?

Logan International Airport, Terminal C Expansion, Boston, MA: The first major transportation center to use all LED technology, Terminal C at Logan showcases “ropes of light” that appear to be holding up the curving ceiling. The project beat the energy code by 50%.

Society of St. John the Evangelist Monastery, Cambridge, MA: Illustrative of our reverence for historical restoration, SSJE seamlessly integrates new technology into a sacred historical space to highlight its architectural richness and improve the experience of the community.

Brandeis University, Mandel Center for the Humanities, Waltham, MA: Utilizing the strong verticality of the columns and curtain-wall mullions, we recessed lines of light into the walls and ceiling to reinforce the architecture. We broke from the rectilinear design in the playful 3-story gathering space, where these lines of light tumble at various angles and heights and change color.

What is it about the lighting industry that really excites you?

LS: The consistently evolving technology that allows us to do more with less is truly inspiring. Plus, we love lamps.

Where to from here?

CA: We are focused on growing our business and becoming a leader in the industry.

Lukas Sturm and Christina Andriole, Principals, worked together previously and joined forces again in 2012 to found Lumen Studio. They are brought together by their desire to give the client that unique solution, and they excel designing outside their comfort zone. Lukas most recently won an IESNA International Illumination Award – Special Citation for his work on Logan International Airport, Terminal C Expansion.
