Illumni Lighting Design Jobs: Project Lighting Designer Position Schuler Shook, Melbourne
Schuler Shook is an established international Theatre Planning and Architectural Lighting practice with offices in Melbourne, Chicago, Dallas, and Minneapolis. The Melbourne office has a successful Theatre Planning practice, with clients such as the Sydney Opera House and the Arts Centre Melbourne. The Melbourne office currently includes theatre and AV planners, and the office is now expanding its collaborative model to include Architectural Lighting in Australia.
As a lighting designer here, you will have the opportunity to help shape the Melbourne practice from the ground floor with the backing, support, portfolio, and assistance of the U.S. offices. We are looking for someone who is detailed, creative, and passionate about lighting design, with the strong technical skills and ambition to help build the office. You will also be expected to participate in initial and ongoing Business Development in Australia.
It is required that all members of the Melbourne office will work together as needed to ensure that we are producing the highest quality and timely advice possible regardless of project scope. This collaboration includes professional development opportunities for all our designers.
What You Bring
You have approximately 5 years of architectural lighting design experience including managing and working directly with clients and stakeholders. You thrive in a collaborative small office environment, are energized by working on multiple projects concurrently, and possess strong technical and graphic skills. You believe in the power of architecture and the arts to inspire.

- An ambitious self-starter with the ability to work closely with clients
- Willingness to help develop the lighting business
- Able to communicate and present design ideas visually and verbally
- Have good writing skills including client correspondence and technical specifications
- A skilled user of AutoCAD, Photoshop, AGI32, and Acrobat (or Bluebeam)
- Experience with Revit, 3ds Max and daylighting calculations using AGI32 or DIALux is a plus
- Education: University degree or an equivalent experience
