Barbounia by Christopher Moulder
When David Goodrowe and Tim Hobby – curators of MODA’s latest exhibition, The South’s Next Wave, realized they needed a central dramatic piece to make a statement in MODA’s modern gallery space they approached local artist, Christopher Moulder.
From Moulder’s current portfolio Goodrowe and Hobby chose, Barbounia, and asked Moulder to supplement his Swarovski crystal and Habotai silk chandelier with footage of his design and fabrication process.
Barbounia is a kinetic piece, with crystals always jostling for position and sparkling with the slightest air movement through the delicate silk feathers. Each crystal in the center nest is actually the counterweight for a silk feather.
Feathers are lit with three programmable colored light sources, producing a moving waving shadow pattern underneath like a rolling radial sea or a solar explosion.
